Matt and Kim | In a Land Where Smiles Grow on Trees
I hated high school. I buried my head in academia and spent most of my time dodging the “popular kids” in the cafeteria. I hid in the corner library carrel or locked myself in the windowless yearbook room. I was clearly a nerd and wasn’t quite convinced that it was a good thing. With every sharp turn, my key survival tactic involved dusting myself off and smiling.
Of course, the music helped. At the time, They Might Be Giants, Camper Van Beethoven, and other nerd rockers took me through those sickening years, patted me on the head, and let me know deep down inside that things were going to be okay. Now, if Matt & Kim were music makers back then, I’m convinced I would’ve been saved twice over.
The keyboard and drumming duo’s self-titled LP shoots endless projectiles of happiness, and their bubbly package of fun is hard not to like. Their immensely endearing live, energetic shows warm my little heart; to see a band that seems like they’re actually having fun on stage is a rare treat. In fact, getting them to wipe those smiles off their faces is almost a futile endeavour.
Maybe that’s why I like them; I’m convinced it’s the only way they made it through high school, too.
